I was intrigued by the recent scandal of the Director of the IMF being arrested in NY charged with assault on a maid in his hotel room. I also came across a global event titled ‘slut walk’ where scantily clad ladies demonstrate against sexual harassment . The title ‘slut walk’ derives from a comment to another victim in Toronto by a policeman to the effect that she should “avoid dressing like a slut in order not to be victimised” One of the London ‘slut walkers’, displayed a placard referencing the NY assault, stating ‘we are all chamber maids’ My somewhat ambiguous pictorial representation of her theme shows a vulnerable female and an assault (or maybe a protective embrace?) depicted with exaggerated perspective. I see this pictorial device in a painting by Edouard Manet
‘A bar at the Folies Bergere’ 1882
The distortion of the barmaid’s left arm is one of the several disconcerting effects he has introduced in this work.
